BMW Files Trademarks for NFTs and the Metaverse

BMW has filed trademarks for NFTs, virtual environments, and more according to trademark attorney Mike Kondoudis

The notable German car manufacturer has applied to trademark its logo for several items, notably including downloadable multimedia featuring:

  • virtual vehicles, toy vehicles, vehicle parts, and accessories,
  • virtual clothing, footwear, and headgear for use in virtual environments,
  • retail stores for virtual vehicles and clothing, and
  • NFT-authenticated media, collectibles, and virtual goods

The trademark was filed on Nov. 25.

BMW is no stranger to Web3, having previously entered the space this past fall via a collab with Kith and Invisible Friends and having created a BMW Museum of Sound NFT project on Polygon in January 2022. But they may be feeling some pressure to "keep up with the Joneses" based on recent moves by Porsche and its NFT launch.

Hyundai and Ford have also filed similar trademark applications this year, related to NFTs and the Metaverse.
