Dropping Today: Metabilia's sports memorabilia "Mystery Box" NFTs

Metabilia is a company that blends the physical and digital worlds together, and today Metabilia has teamed up with the Gaia Marketplace to offer a “Mystery Box” experience that gives collectors access to valuable sports collectibles, including autographed jerseys from Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Justin Herbert and others.

Here’s how it works: collectors will first purchase a Mystery Box NFT from the Gaia Marketplace starting today at 4:00 p.m. ET. Within these Mystery Boxes are NFTs that serve as redemption tickets and correspond to items that are stored in Metabilia’s physical vault. Beginning in February, holders will be able to redeem these NFTs in exchange for the physical collectible. Once an NFT has been redeemed, it will be burned and removed from circulation. Metabilia NFTs will also be tradeable on the Gaia secondary market, allowing collectors the ability to choose whether to “trade it or claim it.”

The Mystery Boxes cost $129 to mint and have an average expected value of $202.48, according to data supplied by Metabilia which references similar comps that are listed on sites like SportsCollectibles.com, Collectible Exchange and eBay. The big ticket item is a Patrick Mahomes Autographed Pro Style Jersey, which has a market value of $1,271. This drop features 10 jerseys from 35 different athletes for a total supply of 350 Mystery Boxes. The complete list of athletes can be found below.
