eBay Acquires NFT Marketplace Known Origin

eBay Inc. has acquired NFT marketplace Known Origin according to an official press release from early Wednesday morning.

The deal is official as of June 22, though no formal details have been disclosed.

"This acquisition is an important step in eBay's tech-led reimagination, ushering in a new era of digital collecting to the world's top destination for collectibles," reads the official release.

The deal comes approximately one month from the time eBay started experimenting with NFT and digital collectible sales on its platform. In late May the company sold a series of Wayne Gretzky NFTs on the Tezos blockchain in partnership with Tezos NFT Marketplace, OneOf.

"As interest in NFTs continues to grow, we believe now is the perfect time for us to partner with a company that has the reach and experience of eBay. This partnership will help us attract a new wave of NFT creators and collectors," said Known Origin Co-founder, David Moore.

eBay was responsible for more than $87B in gross merchandise volume last year.
