Morning Minute | FTX Judge Approves Cash Repayments Plan

TylerD's Market Summary

📈 FTX Money Is Coming

At long last, we finally have resolution to the FTX debacle.

And now up to $7B may be returned to those impacted.

What Happened

In a landmark decision on Monday, a Delaware judge has approved FTX's reorganization plan.

This ensures substantial cash repayments for most creditors while rejecting requests for crypto distributions.

Judge John T. Dorsey of the Delaware Bankruptcy Court approved FTX’s second amended bankruptcy plan on Monday, with overwhelming support from creditors.

The plan will repay most creditors in cash, with an average of 118% of the value of their assets held in 2022.

Some creditors could receive up to 140%.

Objections from creditors who preferred in-kind crypto repayments and disagreed with the valuation of FTX’s FTT token were overruled, as the estate argued it lacked the assets to fulfill such requests.

Key Figures:

  • 94% of creditors supported the reorganization plan, covering $6.83 billion in claims
  • 98% of creditors will receive at least 118% of their claim value in cash, with some receiving up to 140%
  • FTX’s estate valued FTT tokens at zero, arguing that the token has no utility without a functioning exchange

What Are They Saying:

  • FTX attorney Brian Glueckstein stated, “Experts explained that FTT has no fundamental value. There's no utility outside of an operating FTX.com exchange.”
  • Regarding asset recovery and repayment in crypto, he added, “There is no and there will be no restarted FTX.com exchange.”
  • Addressing the possibility of in-kind returns, Glueckstein argued it would be impossible because, “the estate simply did not have those assets.”

Why It Matters:

This resolution offers significant financial recovery for FTX creditors.

While they are getting paid out at the value of their crypto holdings at the time of collapse, which unfortunately are several multiples lower for some tokens like Solana, it's still much better than nothing.

The billion dollar question now becomes - what will the creditors do with the money?

Will they throw it back into the crypto market?

Or simply walk away?

It seems we will find out soon...
