OpenSea announced its move to optional creator fees starting on August 31, 2023. This change comes in the backdrop of the platform’s emphasis on promoting principles of choice and ownership, inherent to the decentralized ecosystem.
One significant update is the discontinuation of the OpenSea Operator Filter, which previously blocked certain marketplaces. Collections that activated this filter will still experience the enforcement of the creator's preferred fees on all secondary sales until February 29, 2024.
Furthermore, OpenSea is making the process transparent and user-friendly for both buyers and sellers. Buyers will now find it easier to spot secondary listings where the creator’s preferred fees are included. Meanwhile, sellers can effortlessly pick the creator's preferred fee or adjust it to their liking when listing.
It's worth noting that creator fees are not being eliminated. Instead, OpenSea is removing unilateral enforcement of such fees, a move reflecting their learning from the limited success of the Operator Filter.
