The New UK Prime Minister Weighs In on Apes vs Punks
The new Prime Minister of the UK, Rishi Sunak, prefers Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) over CryptoPunks, according to a recent clip from a leadership race a couple of months ago that is now surfacing.
When asked to choose between Bored Apes or CryptoPunks, Sunak quickly replied, "Bored Apes." The interviewer followed up with Bitcoin or Ethereum, but Sunak responded, "oh, boy, I'll do a basket of cryptocurrency."
CryptoPunks is the OG 10k pfp NFT project. But since then, BAYC became the only project to surpass it in terms of floor price, and BAYC's parent company Yuga Labs bought the rights to CryptoPunks and Meebits. Right now, BAYC is ranked higher than CryptoPunks on Lucky Trader's NFT Power Rankings.
It's no surprise that Sunak is interested in NFTs and cryptocurrencies considering his assocation with tech and finance businesses. His wife, Akshata Murty, is the daughter of N. R. Narayana Murthy, who founded Infosys, an Indian multinational information technology company. Sunak previously worked for Goldman Sachs, the Children's Investment Fund Management, and Theleme Partners. Him and his wife are in the top 250 richest people in Britian.
Sunak will become the first UK Prime Minister of color when he takes over, which is expected to happen following his meeting with King Charles on Tuesday. He succeeds Liz Truss, who had the shortest Prime Minister reign in UK history. Truss resigned last Thursday after her failed plan for tax cuts, deregulation, and borrowing led to the British pound sinking to a record low against the U.S. dollar, according to The New York Yimes.
