Bored Ape Yacht Club is a unique collection of 10,000 ape-themed NFTs that live on the Ethereum blockchain. Below we'll explore the top five traits and attributes present in the recognizable Bored Ape Yacht Club collection.

What Are Bored Ape Yacht Club Traits?

Each Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT is programmatically generated from over 170 possible traits, including expression, headwear, clothing, fur, hats, mouth, and backgrounds.  Officially “doxxed” in February of 2022, the founders were revealed by a BuzzFeed report that identified Greg Solano (Gargamel) and Wylie Aronow (Gordon Goner) as the brand’s founders and public leaders of Yuga Labs.

The lead artist and illustrator on the project, known as Seneca, is a 27-year-old Asian-American who found her way into the NFT space by way of a creative agent tied to the founders and now CEO of Yuga Labs, Nicole Muniz. Additionally, Seneca only started to receive credit and be recognized months after Bored Ape blew up in the initial NFT boom in the spring of 2021.  While Seneca was the lead artist behind the original collection, she wasn’t the only illustrator on the project, receiving support on other ape traits and environments.

While the Bored Ape Collection is made up of nearly 200 original traits and thousands of possibilities, the collection encompasses a handful of traits and attributes that have significantly higher rarity components, making them much more valuable than the rest of the collection.  In a normal collection, anything under 1% rarity is considered “rare”, while Bored Ape Yacht club only has two commemoratives, 1/1s featured in an auction with Rolling Stone.

Some of the most well-known Bored Ape traits that exist in the total circulation are Bored Ape Yacht Club has become recognized as one of the first “profile picture” NFTs and one of the most widely known NFTs in the ecosystem, with handfuls of celebrities onboarding into the space and sporting apes as their identity in web3 and other social media outlets.

Solid Gold Fur

The Bored Ape “solid gold” fur is by far one of the most well-known and recognizable traits within the total collection, as well as possessing one of the highest rarity percentages.

The solid gold fur trait exists in a total of 46 variants (0.46% of total) in the collection.  There have been a total of five sales year-to-date, with the most recent sale coming in August of 2022 at a price tag of 777 ETH.  Following the historic rise of Bored Ape in May of 2021, the solid gold fur has aligned with the exponential growth seen in the floor, pushing past 100 ETH by late June 2021.

Out of the five sales through 2022, all purchases for the solid golf fur trait have come in at a price tag of more than 420 ETH, with the current floor sitting at 1,200 ETH for Bored Ape #8861.  Currently, there are only six solid gold Bored Apes on the market and most consist of the yellow and army green background trait colors.  Historically, the solid gold fur trait has sold well with large volumes, but investors and collectors can find contrasting backgrounds and clothing really emphasizing the contrast in the solid gold trait.

Historically, seven out of the top ten highest all-time sales have included the solid gold fur, with the most expensive Bored Ape in history selling on Sotheby’s Marketplace for 819 ETH, or $3.41 million dollars at the time ($4161.17 / ETH).

Trippy Captain’s Hat

The Bored Ape “trippy captain’s hat” is another very well-known trait within the collection, headlined with one of the rarest Bored Ape NFTs by statistical rarity, Bored Ape #8135.

The trippy captain’s hat exists in a total of 65 variants (0.65% of the total) in the collection.  There have been a total of nine sales year-to-date, with the most recent sale coming in mid-July at a price tag of 133 ETH.  Over the course of the year, each of the nine sales has fetched a price over 120 ETH, with the current floor sitting at 130 ETH for Bored Ape #2059.

Looking at the collection past the floor price, there are very few listed for sale and a large increase in floor price pending any transaction, with the next closest trippy captain’s hat traits listed for 148.69 ETH and the following listed at the 1,000 ETH mark.

Unshaved/Shaved Dagger Mouth

The Bored Ape collection contains a number of unique mouth traits including kazoos, pizza slices, cigars/pipes, and bubblegum, but the “unshaved and shaved dagger” trait stands out from a rarity and theme perspective.

Both the shaved and shaved dagger mouth trait exist in low quantities, with the unshaved dagger existing in only 28 variants (0.28%) and shaved dagger mouth existing in only 49 variants (0.49%) in the total collection.  Since the start of the year, there have been fifteen shaved dagger and five unshaven dagger sales, with an average median price well above 100 ETH.  The floor price for the unshaved dagger mouth trait is 299 ETH for Bored Ape #6833, with the only other for sale listed at nearly 500 ETH.

The volatility in the price of this trait seen in some charts is mainly due to a few select sales that have registered in the all-time high ranges in late 2021.  Looking at the price volatility for this trait in the longer term, the price growth has remained relatively stable.  This trait will continue to be attractive to investors due to its rarity and previously existing as a trait on one of the highest sales of all time.

Black Suit Clothing

One of the most iconic clothing trait pieces that exist within the Bored Ape Yacht Club collection is the “black suit.”  Though critics and collectors may rank the “admiral’s coat”, “lab coat”, or “pimp clothes” above this trait aesthetically, the black suit speaks for itself with the number of sales, highest sales, and overall status.

The black suit trait exists in a total of 42 variants (0.42% of the total) in the collection.  The current floor price for the black suit clothing trait is a whopping 180 ETH, and with only five listed currently (12% of the total trait), the floor rises exponentially to nearly 800 ETH for Bored Ape #3953.

There have only been four sales for the black suit in the year 2022, but all sales have come in with a minimum price tag of 240 ETH.  Since late August/early September of 2021, no Bored Ape with the black suit trait has traded hands for less than 200 ETH, maintaining its recognition as one of the top traits in the collection.  In addition to the statistical rarity, a number of web3 influencers and celebrities have sported this as profile pictures, increasing the hype around the trait.

Trippy Fur

The Bored Ape Yacht Club's “trippy fur” follows closely behind “solid gold” fur in overall aesthetics, mainly due in fact to the contrast of the fur on other traits and backgrounds.

The trippy fur exists in a total of 77 variants (0.77% of the total) in the collection.  There have been a total of four trippy fur transactions in 2022 year-to-date, with the most recent sale occurring in June of 2022 for 233.33 ETH.  The shortage in volume is due largely in fact to the current floor price, with Bored Ape #5979 listed for the small sum of 350 ETH.  There are only nine total trippy fur trait Bored Ape NFTs listed on the secondary marketplace OpenSea.

Despite one trade in May of 2022, all other Bored Ape NFTs with the trippy fur have sold for over 200 ETH. The trippy fur trait carries a large identity in the web3 space, with two of the top ten highest sales of all time containing the trippy fur and fetching price tags upwards of 800 ETH.
