Square Enix's "Symbiogenesis" Will Live on Polygon

Square Enix announced today that it will release its upcoming web3 project, Symbiogenesis, on Polygon.
🔙 Back It Up
Square Enix, a Japanese video game company best known for its Final Fantasy franchise, teased an NFT collectible art project back in November. Besides a name - Symbiogenesis - and a Spring 2023 launch date, not much else was revealed at the time. All that was known was that this was a new franchise, independent of the Final Fantasy NFTs (slated for release in November 2023, to celebrate Final Fantasy's 25th anniversary).
Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda then doubled down on his belief in the future of blockchain gaming, in his annual letter at the start of January.
The Deets
Described as an interactive web3 digital collectible art experience, Symbiogenesis will have a virtual-turn based storyline. Stories can be unlocked by holding or trading the digital collectibles, and the art will evolve as the player makes strategic moves.
Symbiogenesis will have utility items initially issued off-chain, and players can then opt to trade on-chain via Polygon.
❗ Why It Matters
When Symbiogenesis was first announced last Nov., Square Enix said the story-driven collectibles game was likely to launch on Ethereum. But its now decided on Polygon due to the need for faster and cheaper transactions.
Square Enix has long been synonymous with the immersive role-playing genre, and the other major players in the gaming industry will surely be watching with interest to see how the Japanese publisher cultivates its in-game economy in a web3 world.
🔜 What’s Next?
Symbiogenesis is currently slated to launch in spring 2023.
