Sneak Peek at Various HV-MTL Mech Traits
Julian Son

BAYC tweeted a brief teaser video that shows 80+ possible traits across the different HV-MTL mech types.

❗ Why It Matters

While the Evo 1 reveal was delayed until next month, it'll be worth the wait based on a glimpse at the montage of various traits that BAYC shared today. Garga previously noted there were 1,050 traits, so this preview included less than 10% of the total trait pool.

TwelveFold Collectors Receive a Positive Update
Julian Son

Yuga Labs Chief Content Officer Michael Figge provided a TwelveFold update in a tweet thread 🧵 today.

The Details

  • Initially, TwelveFold was presented in a format that made sense for satoshi inscriptions.
  • Originals were 1,000 x 1,000 pixels.
  • But each work in the collection has since been updated to a 12,000 x 12,000 pixel format and 144K resolution.
  • This version will be made accessible to TwelveFold collectors.
  • Collectors will receive a framed physical print of their piece that will be delivered for free.

❗ Why It Matters

Even with everything else going on within the Yuga ecosystem, such as the ongoing development of the Otherside, the delayed HV-MTL reveal process, and the upcoming Legends of the Mara adventure, the team hasn't forgotten about the owners of TwelveFold, their first work that was purely art.

While TwelveFolds don't include a membership component or utility to be used for further activations, collectors will receive a welcome update in the form of a much higher resolution version of their piece, as well as a framed physical print that will be delivered free of charge.

🔜 What’s Next?

Yuga has prints in production for TwelveFold collectors and are dialing in framing prototypes now. Then...a puzzle?

TwelveFold Collectors Receive a Positive Update
Yuga Labs Taps ex-Epic Games VP as New CTO
Bill Monighetti

Mike Seavers, formerly an executive VP of development at Epic Game, will be joining Yuga Labs as its new CTO on May 22, according to a press release shared this morning.

❗ Why It Matters

Seavers brings a wealth of gaming experience at one of the top gaming studios to the Yuga Labs team as it ramps up its gaming initiatives related to The Otherside. This is a clear area of focus for Yuga Labs, who recently named Daniel Alegre, an ex-Blizzard executive, as its new CEO. Gaming will continue to be a foundational pillar of the Yuga Labs ecosystem, and the Yuga is doubling down on its team.

🔙 The Deets

  • Seavers will succeed Yuga Labs co-founder Kerem Atalay in the CTO role, though Atalay will "remain with the company as a close strategic advisor," according to the release.
  • At Epic Games, Seavers oversaw Epic Games' work on Unreal Engine, Fortnite and the Epic Games Store. He worked at Riot Games prior to joining Epic, where he worked on League of Legends, Valorant and Legends of Runeterra.

🎤 Founder Feedback

HV-MTL Reveal Delayed Until May
Julian Son

The HVs won't be making their way across the rift until May, according to a tweet from @BoredApeYC yesterday.

The Details

  • The official BAYC account appeared to note the delay by cryptically saying, "One turn right, one turn up, three down, two up… Fuck!!! Locked itself again. We’ll need more time to figure this out."
  • The mdvmm.xyz site confirms the minor delay, with the updated infographic for the Evo 1 Reveal now showing May rather than April.
  • The Journey to Evo 2 section also used to say "Begins May," but now says "Begins June" instead.
  • BAYC co-founder Garga added some color, calling the HV-MTL a "monster of a collection" with "8 types, 1050 traits..."

❗ Why It Matters

Besides creating another week or two of pent-up anticipation, this seems like mostly a non-issue. Especially with May being less than a week away anyway.

Obviously, the Evo 2 component of the journey also got shifted out a month later, but with Yuga having so many projects to juggle, it just makes sense for them to take the time to make sure the execution is up to their standards. Rather than have some sort of issue like the companion trait error.

📊 By the Numbers

Not surprisingly, the floor has dipped about 10% since the announcement (-8.5% on OS and -12% on Blur, where the floor is a bit lower at 1.248 ETH). But not a significant move given overall market conditions, and interest will surely return once upcoming timelines are made more concrete.

HV-MTL Reveal Delayed Until May
Novel Labs, Faraway Developing MAYC Focused Game
Logan Hitchcock

Novel Labs, the team behind Mutant Hounds and the Mutant Cartel, and Faraway are collaborating to create Serum City, a city builder game which thrusts Mutant Apes into the spotlight.

The Deets:

  • Mutant Apes are the main characters in Serum City
  • Game's assets will be interoperable on Ethereum's mainnet
  • Game is token-gated, requiring specific NFT ownership for access
  • Launch slated for August
  • Gaming details not yet provided
  • Powered by ApeCoin

The Details

Serum City's main characters are Mutant Apes, and game access will be granted to holders of Mutant Apes, Bored Apes, Genesis Oath, and Mutant Hound NFTs. As the game progresses, access will gradually open up with each new in-game season of content. The game's setting is a dystopian world where Bored Apes are the ruling class, and Mutant Apes are underlings and outcasts.

Serum City will feature an illustrated or comic book-inspired aesthetic, Faraway founder Alex Paley told Decrypt. While gameplay details remain limited, the developers aim to create a richer and more engaging experience than current NFT-based games.

Interoperability is a key focus for the game, with in-game items crafted as NFTs expected to be used in future Novel Labs games. Faraway has previously been building on Solana, potentially opening the door to cross-chain interoperability and functionality as well.

Why It Matters

No one has attempted quite as an ambitious task with their commerical rights and IP ownership as Novel Labs founder Lior Messika, who now puts to use the BAYC and MAYC's he has access to in the build of Serum City and the unfolding lore of Mutant Cartel and Mutant Hounds. Messika aims to far surpass the elementary web3 games that have been developed thus far, adding sophisticated depth and lore and simply making Serum City fun to play. The task seems easier said than done, but perhaps the tangential attachment (there is no formal connection) to Yuga Labs' IP will provide a small leg up.

An additional note of interest is the ApeCoin powered ecosystem in Serum City. Many have speculated that additional ApeCoin sinks will create long term benefits for the price of $APE. Might Serum City, a product not officially affiliated with Yuga Labs, ultimately benefit Yuga's ecosystem token?

📊 By the Numbers

Mutant Hounds NFTs, one of three Mutant Cartel NFTs available, offer the cheapest possibly entry into Serum City at present time. The collection has fallen 26 percent in the last month to a floor price of 0.21 ETH.

🎬 Take Action

Users hoping to gain access to Serum City in August will need a BAYC, MAYC, Genesis Oath, or Mutant Hound NFT.

How to Play Otherside: Legends of the Mara (LOTM)
Jason Bales

Introduction to Otherside: Legends of the Mara (LOTM)

What is LOTM?

Otherside: Legends of the Mara, or LOTM, is a 2D standalone gaming experience powered by ApeCoin. The game builds on the Otherside Koda collection and introduces a new collection called Mara, which can evolve into Kodamara. LOTM begins with every Otherdeed holder being gifted a Vessel, and the subsequent gameplay is up to the player.

Who can participate in LOTM?

Any Otherdeed holder, also known as a Voyager, can participate in LOTM. To play, each Voyager will need at least one Otherdeed, in addition to a Koda and/or an apprentice Mara. Otherdeeds are an essential part of the LOTM experience, and the Koda, Mara, and Kodamara collections play a vital role in unlocking the Otherdeed's potential.

Farming sediment and defending otherdeeds

LOTM is a persistent 2D experience driven by the celestial Odiac, allowing players to evolve their Mara into Kodamara, farm sediment, and defend their Otherdeeds from emerging threats. The game's dynamic environment encourages strategic thinking and planning to ensure the success and growth of players' Otherdeeds. The current threats to the Otherdeeds are unknown, but it is possible that players will be able to attack other plots of land to steal resources.

The Vessels: A Key Component in LOTM

Vessels Legends of the Mara

What is a Vessel?

A Vessel, first seen at the end of the Bone Deed trailer, is a meteor capable of supporting a Shade and can be used in the defense of the Otherside. Each Otherdeed holder has the ability to claim one Vessel per Otherdeed during the claim period. Every Vessel has one of three functions, assigned at random: Hunting, Farming, or Enchanting. Each Vessel has a specific incubation period before revealing a Mara, which will match its Vessel's function.

The Vessel claiming process

The claim period for Vessels will begin in early April. Each claimed Vessel will be sent to the Otherdeed-holding wallet as a separate ERC-721 token with a new smart contract/NFT collection. In addition to being available through the claim process, Vessels can also be purchased and sold via trading platforms.

The different types of Vessels

There are three types of Vessels in LOTM, each associated with a specific function:

  1. Hunting Vessels: These Vessels produce Hunter Mara, which fend off violent threats to Otherdeeds.
  2. Farming Vessels: Farmer Mara emerge from these Vessels and are responsible for harvesting Fragments from Otherdeeds.
  3. Enchanting Vessels: Enchanter Mara come from these Vessels, granting buffs and bonuses.

The Mara: Emerging from the Vessels

What is a Mara?

A Mara is an otherworldly creature that emerges from a Vessel. They are nascent workers capable of performing only simple tasks. The three different types of Mara that emerge from the Vessels will match their Vessel's role: Farmer, Hunter, or Enchanter. Maras will be ERC-721 tokens separate from Vessels, with a new contract/NFT collection.

Mara types and functions

Each Mara has a specific function based on the type of Vessel from which it emerges:

  1. Farmer Mara: These creatures harvest Fragments from Otherdeeds.
  2. Hunter Mara: They are responsible for defending Otherdeeds from violent threats.
  3. Enchanter Mara: Enchanter Mara grant buffs and bonuses to their associated Otherdeeds.

Trading Maras on secondary markets

Once Maras have emerged from their Vessels, they become part of a new collection and can be purchased and sold via trading platforms as ERC-721 tokens.

The Role of Kodas in LOTM

The versatility of Kodas

Kodas are the primary keepers of Otherside. They possess a natural ability to Hunt, Enchant, and Farm, and perform these tasks at far greater power levels than Mara or Kodamara. A Koda can be assigned to an Otherdeed to perform any of these functions (they can do all three, but one at a time). If assigned to be Hunters, Kodas with weapons and Mega Kodas will see their traits employed in battle.

Koda role assignments and abilities

Role assignment for Kodas will be detailed in future activations. Kodas will play a crucial role in the LOTM experience, making full use of their diverse abilities to support their respective Otherdeeds.

The Celestial Odiac

The Otherside Odiac and Mara evolution

Mara evolution is tied to a celestial coordinate system called the Otherside Odiac. The Odiac is divided into four seasons: Creation, Evolution, Afterlife, and Abyss. Each season corresponds to five Otherside Constellations. When a Mara ingests a seasonal Catalyst, it evolves into a Kodamara, taking on traits possessed by that Catalyst. Nearly all Catalysts possess traits belonging to one or another of the Season's constellations. Only the most uncommon kind of Catalysts - the Hybrid Catalysts - possess traits that belong to two.

Seasonal Catalysts and Kodamara traits

Creation catalysts will be available this summer. Fragments, which can be fed to Mara, are derived from an Otherdeed's sediment. Genesis Kodas and Farmer Mara can be attached to Otherdeeds to harvest them. A Kodamara's traits are affected by the Fragments it ingested as a Mara. Beginning with the Creation Season, the Kodamara reveal themselves.
