Game Engine Unity Expands to Blockchain

Unity, a cross-platform game engine, is now supporting decentralization in gaming, per a press release from today.

What It Means

The "Decentralization" category page on the Unity Asset Store now has 13 compatible solutions. Developers can use software development kits (SDKs) to integrate NFTs, tokens, and on-chain programs into Unity-based games. They'll also be able to integrate marketplaces and facilitate interaction with wallets.

With the SDKs, game developers building on Unity now have the option to build on blockchains such as Ethereum, Solana, Algorand, Tezos, Aptos and Flow. The MetaMask Unity SDK is also available in the Unity Asset Store, and game developers can integrate MetaMask (which seems to be the only wallet-based SDK available for now). So for example, a game built on Unity could connect to MetaMask to facilitate purchases in crypto.

❗ Why It Matters

Basically, developers can now turn in-game assets into NFTs with Unity's support and suite of products. This move will lower the barriers to entry for web3 game developers, as developers will now be able to use trusted solutions to manage digital assets, utilize smart contracts, build using blockchain networks, etc.

Unity Technologies said in 2020 when it filed for IPO that more 50 percent of mobile, PC, and console games use its platform. Examples of games made with Unity include Niantic's Pokémon Go, and virtual world games such as The Sandbox and Decentraland.
